After suffering a brutal heartbreak in far-off Oslo, Norway, despondent malcontent Loren Niva returns to his hometown - the seemingly idyllic, sun-soaked beachside resort town of Pearl Strand, Florida. Morbidly determined to end his pointless existence on the night of his thirtieth birthday, Loren whittles down the days in a drunken, drug-fueled miasma of casual violence and self-pity.

Along for this hell ride are several members of Loren's colorful social circle, including Ziggy, a hard-partying, easygoing drug dealer of some local standing, Justin, a recently engaged school teacher with a debilitating love of vodka and loose women, and Stephen, the boastful, womanizing self-styled scion of his powerful family - and perhaps the most ineffectual and irresponsible criminal defense attorney the state of Florida has ever seen.

As events compound and careen towards the inevitable, these four 'Stranded' - tenuously linked by schoolyard memories and teenage drug habits - find themselves floundering in their various attempts to recapture their vainglorious youth. Their thirties looming menacingly ahead of them, each of these unabashed man-children will be thoroughly tried and tested, victims of their own fears, addictions and objectively terrible decisions.

Loren, Stephen, Ziggy and Justin are about to discover just how far down the spiral goes, when the stars malign...

The Stars Malign edition by Loren Niva Literature Fiction eBooks

The Bad Russian returns to the pages with more debauch, self-loathing and self-destruction.

The author brings back his Suitcase Pimp protagonist with a self-immolating vengeance, but anticipates the possibility of staleness (however unlikely in my view) by introducing a number of new characters. These characters occasionally wrench the narrator's pen from Niva and help to tell a story that interweaves and intersects in exciting, humourous and poignant ways.

Niva's writing just gets better and better. The alternating viewpoints of the Great Dane, D-M, Ziggy and other Stranded miscreants shed some light on the author's matured technique, which marries well with his pre-existing fast-paced story-telling style. The added length of the book in comparison to his preview work also gave the story and the characters more time to develop, which I appreciated.

His best yet. Highly recommended.

The Stars Malign by Loren Niva

This novel leads by example as a method of dealing with the current world economic crisis and depression. Most of the characters are fuelled by a combination of various drugs and alcoholic drinks and take little interest in current affairs.

Although this world is not one I am familiar with the novel gives a great insight into the people who party through life on various cocktails of emotions. Most importantly it is entertaining and the characters are sufficiently varied.

Loren is depressed following an extended stay in Norway and based on what he tells us it is difficult to see why his girlfriend dumped him. Whatever he does thereafter back at his base in Florida there is little to mask his feeling of loss. The main story of the book is his plot to have a major party (his 30th birthday) at which he will commit suicide. He continually emails his ex-girlfriend without any reply and in the hope she will arrive before his suicide.

Before the main party there is a weekend away with his best friends in Miami. The partying is extreme and not to be missed. It brings together a bunch of friends who just about get on together whilst partying in different manners ranging from getting drunk to getting high or just totally out of it.

Overall it is a great page turner and the only disappointment was the ending. I did realise later that the ending did however create an opportunity for a sequel.

I may, in my younger years, have engaged briefly in one or two activities similar to those described in the novel. In summary though my life does seem boring compared to the antics these guys get up to.
The Stars Malign was an incredibly entertaining read that completely drew me in to the lives and dark habits of each of the protagonists. Somehow I felt myself both loathing and eventually empathising with Loren as the story developed. The crescendo was quite spectacular, the gradual moral decline of the protagonist Dartmouth was entirely engrossing. A gloomy but exciting and sometimes hilarious read, I would label this as being comparable to the dark comedic stylings of Irvine Welsh. I highly recommend this book!
In the second instalment of the Loren Niva saga, there is a discernible change from the hedonistic indulgence of Suitcase Pimp right at the outset. Chapter one launches into some surprisingly eloquent prose, and from there the journey is both introspective and accessible. For a female reader, there is an occasional softness that helps cushion the overtly male driven narrative, and while the characters still may not be loveable, they are engaging. Especially Niva, who even at rock bottom, offers some redeeming insights. It is great to see this promising writer mature without losing his spark.

Like a dark sequel to the Hangover, or an epic episode of It's Always Sunny... The Stars Malign is real, sad and tragically humorous all at once. Definitely worth a read!
